Infertility test – What Every Woman Needs To Know!

An infertility test plays a major role in the diagnosis of a person affected with infertility.  It is common to see many men and women who have tried to conceive for several months, become worried and consult a physician. The physician does some clinical examinations and makes the patient undergo the appropriate infertility test in order to identify if the concerns are justified.

What is Infertility

Infertility is said to be the inability to conceive in spite of having sexual relationship for at least a period of one year without the use of any contraceptives. Therefore any person who has not tried to conceive for at least one year will not be considered to be infertile.

When should one reckon of undertaking an infertility test?

1. If the woman is not having regular periods and has abnormal menstrual cycles then there is a high probability that infertility can be present.

2. If the male is not able to ejaculate and sperm is not released, then infertility can be suspected.

3. If a woman is more than 35 years of age and has not been able to become pregnant in spite of the fact that she has not used birth control measures for a period of more than six months that shows a possibility of being infertile.

If a woman has tried to become pregnant, has been off birth control measures for more than one year and is in the age group between 20 to 35, then she could also be suspected to be infertile.

There isn’t one single infertility test that can prove for sure that you’re infertile, instead several tests have to be performed and they may include physical examination, blood tests, semen analysis, endometrial biopsy, laparoscopy or hysterosalpingogram (HSG). Each of these diagnostic procedures helps identify a different condition and that brings us to the advantages of doing these tests:

Any infertility test assists you in identifying the exact cause of infertility which helps you focus on a treatment for that specific condition therefore not worrying about all the other factors.
The test helps you identify the severity of infertility. An infertility test like laparoscopy assists the doctor in viewing the affected part and makes it simpler for him to identify the seriousness of the disease, thus the treatment extent and its duration can be plotted based on this.

 

There are many infertility tests like ultrasound that do not cause any known effects or side effects.  A test like laparoscopy is an invasive procedure and may cause more side effects than other procedures. Some  tests can cause pain and bleeding.

These tests are done initially by the physician and then when some abnormality is identified you may be referred to another doctor in a specialist center where further tests are conducted. Usually a single infertility test is not sufficient to diagnose the problem, that’s why it is recommended to have several tests done.
